Overview of single-mode fiber

- Mar 16, 2018-

Single-mode fiber can support longer transmission distances than multimode fiber, and in 100Mbps Ethernet to 1G gigabit Network, monolithic fiber can support more than 5000m transmission distance.

From a cost point of view, because the optical terminal machine is very expensive, the cost of using single-mode fiber will be higher than the cost of multimode fiber optic cable. The refractive index distribution is similar to that of the mutant fiber, the fiber core diameter is only 8~10μm, and the light travels in the direction of the center axis of the core in a straight line shape. Because this fiber can only transmit one mode (two polarization states degenerate), it is called single-mode fiber, and its signal distortion is very small.
